If a squealing noise comes from your Whirlpool gas dryer when you start it, the noise most likely comes from a dry bearing on the idler pulley assembly. The lack of lubrication is probably causing the bearing to drag on the idler pulley without turning freely. Lubricating the pulley on older models built before the mid-1990s is relatively easy because the idler pulley can be removed without tools via a bottom panel. Alternatively, newer 29-inch models require a fair amount of disassembly to gain access to the improved idler pulley assembly.
Unplug the Whirlpool dryer from its electrical power source. Grasp each side of the lower-front access panel. Pull the top edge from the retaining clips, rotate it forward, then lift it off the bottom tags and lay it on one side.
Locate the drive motor, idler pulley assembly and the drive belt in the right rear of the opening. Push the idler pulley forward with one hand and remove the drive belt from the drive motor pulley with the other. Slip the belt from under the idler pulley.
Unclip the toe of the spring arm attached to the idler assembly from the slot in the base of the dryer. Lift it out. Hold the assembly with the shaft pointing upward and apply three or four drops of lightweight household oil to the pulley shaft. Rotate the wheel back and forth to allow the oil to penetrate, then spin the wheel to ensure that its turning freely. If this fails to free up the movement, replace the idler pulley assembly with part No. 691366.
Insert the toe on the idler pulley spring arm into its slot on the dryer base. Hold the pulley assembly with one hand and lever it forward. Form a loop on the drive belt with the other hand. Slip the left side of the belt under the idler pulley and secure the loop over the drive motor pulley. Slowly release tension on the idler pulley until the belt is taut.
Rotate the dryer drum counterclockwise one full turn while facing the dryer front. This will align the drive belt in its slots and ensure that it tracks properly.
Check the assembly visually and reinstall the lower-front access panel. Plug the dryer in to its power source. Turn on the Whirlpool gas dryer to ensure that its running smoothly without squealing.
